Lily Tuck has had a wonderful and accomplished career as a National Book Award-winning novelist, story writer, essayist, and biographer. She is one of our most distinguished contributors to American literature. With The Double Life of Liliane, Tuck writes what may well be her crowning achievement to date, and, significantly, too, her most autobiographical work.

As the child of a German movie producer father who lives in Italy and a beautiful, artistically talented mother who resides in New York, Liliane's life is divided between those two very different worlds. A shy and observant only child with a vivid imagination, Liliane uncovers the stories of family members as diverse as Moses Mendelssohn, Mary Queen of Scots and an early Mexican adventurer, and pieces together their vivid histories, through both World Wars and across continents. What unfolds is an astonishing and riveting metanarrative an exploration of self, humanity, and family in the manner of W.G. Sebald and Karl Ove Knausgaard.

Told with Tuck's inimitable elegance and a rich and varied array of characters, The Double Life of Liliane is an intimate and poignant coming-of-age portrait of the writer as a young woman.

The Double Life of Liliane (Audible Audio Edition) Lily Tuck Recorded Books Books

Never discovered the intriguing promise of a "double life". What was it? She had divorced parents? Who lived in different places? Paris and Rome are cool. But, that's it? Some famous of the times were glossed over. So what? Also, history was lightly touched. World Wars, Vietnam, too. Liliane could have been an interesting woman. She probably was. Should have made her one in this book. Snore.

The Double Life of Liliane (Audible Audio Edition) Lily Tuck Recorded Books Books Reviews

A novel? A memoir? A sly metaphysical mystery unfolding in the unnamed space between the two? However you might frame this curious hybrid, it’s an extraordinarily subtle and suggestive piece of work. Employing crystalline fragments of family lore, discursive flashes of world history, photos that obscure as much as they show, and a passion for elliptical gaps between all of the above, Tuck’s deadpan style casually takes on a riot of enigmas self, family, fact, fancy, rhetoric, presence, absence, banality, death. This is highly recommended for readers of Anne Carson, Patrick Modiano, W.G. Sebald—in other words, come to this text for a delicacy of reflection, not gaudy sensation, and you’ll be deeply rewarded.
I did not like it.
It is one of the best written books. If someone wants to learn how to write. this is one of the books to read.
I was unable to relate to the protagonist, and her visits to wonderful places with well known friends seemed like name dropping rather than formative to her development.
well written memoir that crosses fact and fiction
This is a vanity novel, masquerading as pseudo-autobiography, leaving us only to think the best of the novelist. My favorite passage is her supposed and accidental meeting with Vladimir Nabokov on the train, for breakfast, while she is a teenager. Nabokov is reading a pamphlet, in French, on butterflies, and begins a conversation with Liliane. Naturally, he asks her what she wants to do with her life, and she replies that she wants to be a writer. Nabokov replies that, coincidentally, he's an author, too, and would love to read her work when she writes it (someday). Come, come, Lily, what vanity.
I was confused from the beginning and wonder what made me buy this book...it must have been a great review
in the NY Sunday Times. It felt very weird and strangely vain. Is it truth or fiction? Is she fearful of the truth? Is
there more to tell?
