This is my first Andre Norton book, and I really liked it. A seemingly straight forward partnership launches the tale, Hume wants a little payback, and Wass wants a reasonable, if illegal, profit. As they set their plan in motion, and the story unfolds, all of the characters are reminded of the many perils of new frontiers.Vye was an intriguing character, as he wrestles with the situation June and Wass' plot places him in. He comes to learn a lot about himself on this adventure, and so much of it is shown beautifully to us as readers. We have the chance to watch him make tough calls, and grow as a character. By the time the book was coming to a close I was hoping Hume and The would have another adventure / book.

From an era when the good guys were really good, and the bad guys were...well, the opposite. Adventure, honor, duty, finding out how to interact in society---all the same concerns that crop up now in YA writings, except without sex! Andre Norton wrote many books, and with a very high level of consistent quality. Give an adolescent reader a shot at one of them, they are still enjoyable.
Norton is one of my favorite authors, but I had not read this one. Enjoyed it.

As always, Ms Norton shows steady and good character growth and development as the story progresses. I have been reading her stories for the past 5 decades and this book appears to be edited since I read it last.
Half of a good old Ace Double. Vintage science fiction you will enjoy. Got it free but worth paying for.
A fun read and a quick read, Andre Norton is a breath of fresh air after some of the newer attempts at writing. Her point of view jumps are sometimes confusing, but not a problem. She leaves many mysteries still to untangle, but this is not the last book in this mileau.
I won't summarize, as the other reviews have done the summaries. I recommend reading this just to see the craft, and to also experience the creative vocabulary "Gentlehomo," "civs," etc. I defy you to find a female character. Andre Norton (born Alice Mary Norton)was writing in a man's world for male editors, and she did a fine job. You can't beat the price, either.
This seems sort of a shorter book, but it's packed with adventure. There is no sexual content, and no innuendo, but I know Norton was a grown woman and not naive, so in the opening she didn't need to hint at the terrible danger possible for the young man when the Hunter takes him from that dive. It's interesting that occasionally the the Hunter says and does some really stupid things, it makes him very human.
